The Forgiveness of Sins....
This week I chose not to preach but open the pulpit to a dear friend Rev. Dr. Joshua Scott a colleague from the Baptist world. He preached the text of Genesis 9 talking about God's Provision and Humanity's Need. He address the forgiveness of sin against poor interpretation of scripture that hurt black and brown bodies by the phrase Noah spoke to his son Ham, "curse be Canaan."
We made space in the entire service of worship to ask God for the forgiveness of sins of racism and hatred against brothers and sisters. We spoke of ways that white men and women have been unaware of the daily injustice of those who are black and brown simply because of the color of their skin.
As an introduction to the Apostle's Creed I gave these words:
This weeks focus from the Apostles Creed is the “forgiveness of sins” this was added around the same time of the communion of saints in the 4th century. It is important that we believe in this because one we recognize our brokenness, our faults, and failings and two that there is forgiveness from God and that we too are to do the work of forgiveness in our lives and relationships with those we know and those we have never met.
May we all seek forgiveness for the injustices done in the name of Christ. For the hurt and suffering put on generations of people of color and those who are different that what has been deemed normal and acceptable. We do believe in a forgiveness of sins and therefore we are called to work for reconciliation with our siblings, with our neighbors all created in the image of God.
